Targeting Lightweighting and Environmental Trends, Jiyuan Holdings Upgrades Its Aluminum Can Manufacturing Technology

As the global metal packaging industry shifts toward greater sustainability and resource efficiency, Jiyuan Holdings Co., Ltd., a leading metal packaging manufacturer headquartered in China, has announced a comprehensive upgrade of its two-piece aluminum can production technology. The initiative focuses on lightweighting and reducing the carbon footprint of its manufacturing processes, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to green innovation.

Jiyuan Holdings, which traces its roots back to 1993, officially entered the two-piece aluminum can business in 2016 with the commissioning of its Guangdong Jiduobao plant. Today, the Group operates multiple production bases across Fujian, Hubei, Anhui, and Guangdong, with a total annual aluminum can capacity exceeding 2 billion units. These cans are widely used for beer, carbonated soft drinks, fruit granule beverages, and other popular drinks consumed in the domestic Chinese market.

The upgraded technology incorporates advanced lightweighting techniques that reduce the amount of aluminum per can while maintaining structural integrity and print quality. By optimizing can wall thickness and reshaping the bottom profile, the company has achieved material savings of approximately 5–8% per can without compromising performance on high-speed filling lines.

"The lightweight aluminum can is one of the most effective ways to reduce packaging waste and lower transportation emissions," said a senior operations manager at Jiyuan Holdings. "Our goal is to offer the same high-quality, reliable can with less material and less energy consumed during production."

In addition to lightweighting, Jiyuan Holdings has introduced new energy-efficient curing ovens and compressed air systems at its Guangdong facility, cutting natural gas and electricity consumption per thousand cans by nearly 12%. The company is also expanding its use of internally coated cans that are fully recyclable, aligning with the circular economy priorities of major beverage brands.

Jiyuan’s aluminum cans currently serve a wide range of well-known food and beverage companies, including Kirin Beer, Zhenzhen Beverage, Pukou Fruit Granule Drinks, and other leading domestic names. Many of these customers have set ambitious sustainability targets, and the upgraded aluminum can technology helps them reduce scope 3 emissions from packaging materials.

Industry analysts note that lightweighting has become a key battleground in the metal packaging sector, especially in China where fierce competition and rising raw material costs push manufacturers to innovate. With this latest move, Jiyuan Holdings aims to strengthen its position as a top-tier supplier while contributing to national carbon peaking and neutrality goals.

The company has confirmed that the new technology will be rolled out across all its aluminum can production lines by the end of the next fiscal year. Jiyuan also plans to collaborate with aluminum suppliers to develop sheet metal with higher recycled content, further lowering the overall environmental impact of its products.

As consumer awareness of sustainable packaging grows, Jiyuan Holdings believes that its dual focus on lightweighting and green manufacturing will not only reduce costs for customers but also build a more resilient, responsible business for the next decade.
