In Response to Carbon Peaking and Neutrality Goals, Jiyuan Holdings Ramps Up R&D in Recyclable Aluminum Cans and Green Manufacturing

In line with China’s ambitious carbon peaking and neutrality targets, Jiyuan Holdings Co., Ltd., a leading metal packaging manufacturer, has announced a significant acceleration of its research and development efforts in recyclable aluminum cans and green manufacturing processes.

The company, which traces its roots back to Xiamen Jiyuan Enterprise Co., Ltd. established in 1993, currently operates production bases across Fujian, Hubei, Anhui, and Guangdong provinces. With an annual capacity exceeding 2 billion aluminum cans (two-piece) and another 2 billion tinplate cans (three-piece), Jiyuan Holdings supplies to major food and beverage brands such as COFCO, JDB Group, Nestlé Coffee, Yinlu Group, Dali Foods Group, and Kirin Beer.

"In response to the national 'dual carbon' goals, we are stepping up our commitment to sustainable packaging," said a senior spokesperson from Jiyuan Holdings. "Our new R&D roadmap focuses on increasing the recycled content of our aluminum cans and reducing energy consumption throughout the production cycle – from coil coating to printing and washing."

Aluminum cans are widely recognized as infinitely recyclable without loss of quality, yet improving collection systems and recycling efficiencies remains a challenge. Jiyuan's R&D team is currently working on lightweight can designs that use less raw material while maintaining structural integrity, as well as developing water-based coatings to replace solvent-based alternatives, thereby lowering volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

The company has also begun retrofitting its Guangdong Jiduobao facility – the group’s flagship two-piece aluminum can plant that came online in 2016 – with energy-efficient ovens and waste heat recovery systems. These upgrades are expected to cut natural gas consumption by approximately 15% per million cans produced.

Industry analysts note that beverage brands are increasingly demanding eco-friendly packaging to meet their own sustainability pledges. By strengthening its in-house capabilities in recycled aluminum processing and cleaner production, Jiyuan Holdings aims to differentiate itself as a green supplier in China’s highly competitive metal packaging market.

Looking ahead, the group plans to collaborate with upstream aluminum sheet suppliers to establish a traceable closed-loop recycling system for post-consumer aluminum cans. "Green manufacturing is not just a compliance exercise – it is a strategic advantage," the spokesperson added. "We are committed to leading the metal packaging industry toward a low-carbon future."
